Copper City Chiefs Sign Tough Defenseman Nick Newman

ROME, N.Y. — The Copper City Chiefs have added size, toughness and a physical presence to their blue line with the signing of 6-foot-3, 225-pound defenseman Nick Newman for the 2026–27 season.

Newman comes to Copper City after playing with the Salem Sasquatch of the COHL. His junior hockey experience includes time with the New England Stars of the NA3HL.

At 6-foot-3 and 225 pounds, Newman gives the Chiefs a big-bodied defenseman who combines physical play with good skating ability. His style is built around making things difficult for opposing forwards, protecting the area around his goaltender and bringing an edge to the Chiefs lineup.

“Nick is big, tough and a good-skating defenseman,” said Chiefs Head Coach Kevin Krogol. “He’ll clear the front of the net, play hard in the tough areas, and he will definitely take up for his teammates. He brings an element to our blue line that we wanted to have.”

Newman earned his contract after participating in the Chiefs' recent tryout camp, where he was one of the players selected to advance to Main Training Camp.

“We wanted to use our tryout camp to find players who could legitimately make our hockey team, and Nick came in and earned that opportunity,” said Chiefs Owner and President Jimmy Milliken. “He’s a big, strong defenseman who brings toughness and isn't afraid to stand up for his teammates. Chiefs fans are going to enjoy the way he plays.”

Newman joins the Chiefs as preparations continue for the franchise's inaugural season in Rome.

The Copper City Chiefs open their 2026–27 inaugural season at the John F. Kennedy Civic Arena on Saturday, October 24 against the Bathurst St. Lions. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
